Sankofa Gardens, located at 1651 Tulane Ave. in Shreveport, uses an organic garden as a classroom space.

Sankofa Vision, Inc. will host their annual Harvest Jubilee 10 a.m.-1 p.m. this Saturday at the Sankofa Gardens, located at 1651 Tulane Avenue in Shreveport. The Harvest Jubilee is an opportunity for the 20 students enrolled in Sankofa's Saturday School program, which uses an organic community garden as a classroom space, to present what they've learned in the four-week course. Students ages 6-11 will present demonstrations, lead garden tours, and guests will be able to taste the fruits (and vegetables) of their labor during lunch.

"Some of the food we'll be serving is harvested from the garden," said Sankofa Executive Director Leia Lewis. "We're really excited to be nurturing the younger generation of environmental stewards and helping them learn to live sustainable lives."

Admission to the Harvest Jubilee is free, but donations are encouraged. Arrive by noon if you'd like to take the garden tour and eat lunch with the students.

If you're among the thousands who've been flocking to the Shreveport Farmers' Market in downtown Shreveport (see their new website for schedules and more info), why not head from the Farmers' Market to Sankofa Gardens to see how one very special community garden has matched its nutritional value with educational value?
