"Cakeland" and "Impromptu" at artspace

Thursday, 10 March, 2011 8:55 by Chris Jay

One of the bizarrely beautiful cake creatures created by California artist Scott Hove currently on display in the "Cakeland" exhibit at artspace
(710 Texas Street).

If it's been a while since you last visited artspace, a multi-level gallery operated by the Shreveport Regional Arts Council (SRAC) at 710 Texas Street in downtown Shreveport, there are currently several great reasons to get reacquainted. "Cakeland," an exhibit of creepily beautiful works created by California artist Scott Hove, is on display through Saturday, May 7 in the "mainspace" gallery. Hove has created a gallery of nightmarish creatures that appear to be emerging from ornately-decorated cakes. It's an original and fun exhibit that also includes a sort of funhouse installation in the center of the room. Wandering into the installation reminded me of similar house-type structures that Yoko Ono builds for museums and galleries around the country.

Also on display beginning Thursday, March 10 with a 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. opening reception, "Impromptu" is an exhibit gathering the original works of more than 200 Northwest Louisiana artists. Located in the upstairs "coolspace" gallery, "Impromptu" is also on display through May 7. The March 10 opening reception is free to attend. Complimentary event parking will be available in the parking lot across the street from artspace, and abdundant curbside parking is also usually available within a block or so of the building.

According to the artspace website, "Impromptu" was organized
"so that the Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts and his Staff along with Federal, State, and Local Elected Officials, and Artists and Arts Organizations from Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas may experience the rich talent and professionalism of this Arts Community." I wandered into the exhibit accidentally, as it was being prepared for tonight's opening, and was dumbstruck by the amount of talent on display and the sheer volume of work. Like a 17th century art salon, the works on display are packed tight, floor-to-ceiling. It's a phenomenal exhibit for anyone wishing to get more familiar with our region's working artists.
