In Praise of George's Grill

Two cheeseburgers get ready to work their magic on hungry diners at George's Grill in Shreveport.

George's Grill, located across the street from the Southeast corner of the Centenary College campus at 175 E. King's Hwy., is the kind of hometown diner where the waitress asks how your momma is doing.  Time slows down at George's.  In one corner, a group of aging veterans might linger over lunch while, across the room, a group of Centenary students imbibe as much coffee as possible to get through their next exam.

Breakfast is served all day long.  Their omelettes are very popular, as are their giant pancakes and golden cream waffles.  Just a word of advice: If you're ordering pancakes or waffles at George's, don't be surprised when they show up with a hunk of butter large enough to sculpt a bust of your dining companion out of.  I seem to remember loving breakfast at George's, back before I discovered the simple beauty of their cheeseburgers.  I get a little misty-eyed just thinking about these cheeseburgers: diced onions, toasted buns, melted American cheese.  Throw in some of their hand-cut french fries, and you've got a serious contender for best comfort food in Shreveport-Bossier City.

If you're heading to George's Grill, take five minutes and just soak up the little details: the wood paneling, the framed Times story about Dan Quayle visiting, the coffee-stained portrait of George W. Bush. To put it simply, "they don't make 'em like this anymore."
