KEITHVILLE, La. — What was to be the first chance since June to catch up on the chimpanzees at The National Chimpanzee Sanctuary on September 13th will have to wait until October 11th. Due to the approaching severe weather associated with Hurricane Ike, the sanctuary feels it is in the best interest of our guests and the chimpanzees to cancel our event. For those that have already gathered items for the chimpanzees in anticipation of the September event, sanctuary staff will be on hand next week – September 15th – 19th to receive them. Cash donations will be gratefully accepted as well. Located in the Eddie D. Jones Nature Park in Keithville, the sanctuary will be open Saturday, October 11th from 9 a.m. until noon. Guests will have the opportunity to observe the chimpanzees in their natural forested habitats and tour the sanctuary using the groomed trails with overlooks and generous views of the two five- acre habitats from across the barrier moat. Plans are being made to have the special guests who were scheduled for tomorrow’s event appear in October so that our sports fans will not be disappointed. Chimp Haven sincerely thanks the Shreveport Sports, the Bossier/Shreveport Battlewings, and the Shreveport/Bossier Mudbugs for their willingness to partner with us for this event. Joslyn Pennywell, a current contestant on the hit CW series “America’s Next Top Model” was also scheduled to make a special appearance at Discovery Day and will appear in October.
