Discovering Louisiana's Other Side

Louisiana’s Other Side

Now that certainly has a nice ring to it. To me, it’s all about discovery.

It’s been almost a year since I made my way to Shreveport-Bossier City. I still consider myself a newcomer – and rightfully so. There are a number of things that I have yet to delve into within these twin cities and beyond.

But so far, I’ve had my share of great experiences.

Of course what I think of first are the people. Shreveport-Bossier City is full of folks with welcoming smiles and friendly conversation. Whether it’s in the grocery store, at the Louisiana Boardwalk or on the riverfront, it’s helped me to feel right at home.

Area natives also have pointed out some great places to have fun. There truly is something here for everyone. It’s hard not to think back to the festive Red River Revel Arts Festival. The weather was just right, the art was beautiful, the performances – including the very memorable Funk Master George Clinton – were awesome and the food was delicious.

Speaking of food, I hope they don’t get tired of seeing me at Texas Street Tavern, at 3015 E. Texas St. in Bossier City. If you haven’t tried it for lunch or dinner, I recommend the grilled tilapia and au gratin potatoes. But if you’re not in the mood for seafood, you can’t go wrong with their juicy ribeye. While you’re there, don’t forget your sweet tooth – Texas Street Tavern has you covered with a great brownie and vanilla ice cream combo or crème brulée, just to name a few.

For a night out, 211 Martini Lounge is a great spot that recently opened in downtown Shreveport. The place has a great set-up on both the ground floor and loft area just above the bar. Try toasting to my favorite – the Asian Pear martini. If you’ve had the fruit, imagine it served in a chilled martini glass. The music is always jumpin’ and they also offer some drink specials.

But when it’s time to wind down, I hit the trails for a few peaceful walks with a friend each week along Clyde Fant Parkway. It’s a great way to soak up the scenic surroundings of downtown and the surrounding area. I’m looking forward to biking along a few other trails.

I'm also looking forward to finding all of the hidden treasures that Louisiana's Other Side has to offer. Whether you're a native or a newcomer -- what are some of your favorite things to see and do in Shreveport-Bossier City? If you're a visitor, what do you want to know more about?
