Soul Asylum to Perform Free Outdoor Concert at Louisiana Downs, Saturday, April 18!

Thursday, 26 March, 2009 19:05 by cmorgan

For Immediate Release March 26, 2009

For more information, contact Jessica Oliver / office (318) 741-7800, cell phone (318) 207-7363

Soul Asylum to Perform Free Outdoor Concert at Louisiana Downs, Saturday, April 18!

(Bossier City, LA) – Louisiana Downs is once again throwing the hottest party in town! Join us on Saturday, April 18th, for an unforgettable performance by Soul Asylum with opening act The Kin.

The areas biggest outdoor party will get underway at 7pm at Louisiana Downs! Enjoy great music, food, and drinks!
And, did we mention that admission is FREE!

THE SILVER LINING, Soul Asylum’s ninth full-length album (there were several EPs and cassette-only releases back in the indie ’80s) is every bit as quirky and off-centered cut-to-the-bone rock as their hardcore fans have come to expect, an indication that the Minneapolis-bred band has lost none of its edge. And why should they?

"We weren’t Mouseketeers," Dave said, "we never had any sort of showbiz advice that was useful to us. Everything that we’ve done has been relatively homespun and we’ve had to do it all by ourselves and we never got a lot of fake support or showbiz chops or anything like that."

But Soul Asylum is a band of story-tellers in the Midwestern tradition, and the new album also digs deep into interpersonal relationships ("Crazy Mixed Up World," "Lately"), the fabric of peaceful co-existence ("Good For You"), and even a couple of songs that are redolent of New Orleans, Dave’s second home-away-from-home for the past few years ("Standing Water," "Bus Named Desire"). The downtown punk rock vibe crashes through on several cuts ("All Is Well," "Whatcha Need"). The new album was recorded at Flyte Time and the Terrarium Studios in Minneapolis, co-produced by Soul Asylum with Grammy Award-winning engineer-turned-producer Steve Hodge (on various tracks), and with John Field (on various tracks).

CHIMP HAVEN’S “SPACE CHIMP”

KEITHVILLE, La.It could be said that the Endangered Species chocolate bar bearing a photo of two-year-old Tracy, Chimp Haven’s youngest chimpanzee, is out of this world.

Last Sunday, when NASA successfully launched shuttle Discovery to the International Space station, it carried eight Endangered Species chocolate bars in Tracy packaging. One of the space walkers of flight STS-119 requested them to be packed as a dessert for one of the astronauts’ meals.

On January 8, 2007, Tracy was an unexpected addition to Chimp Haven, the National Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Keithville, Louisiana.  She has won the hearts of the care staff, the public, and many of the other chimpanzees at Chimp Haven.  While she stays close to her mother, Teresa, she is often watched over by many chimpanzee “aunties.”   Very photogenic, she has served as a “cover girl” for Chimp Haven publications, not to mention the Endangered Species chocolate bar.

Endangered Species Chocolate, a company that produces organic and ethically traded chocolate bars gives a percentage of  its proceeds from the sale of its products to support Chimp Haven’s mission of providing care to chimpanzees no longer needed in research or as pets or entertainers.

###

Chimp Haven, The National Chimpanzee Sanctuary, is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to provide a permanent retirement sanctuary for chimpanzees no longer used for biomedical research, entertainment, or as pets. Located 25 miles southwest of Shreveport, La. in the Eddie D. Jones Nature Park in Caddo Parish, Chimp Haven opened its doors in Phase I to the first residents in April 2005. The sanctuary is now home to 132 retired chimpanzees.
